Integrative Medicine and Coordinated Care

Sex is complicated.  The best treatment for most sexual dysfunctions is integrative care where the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of the problem are treated in a coordinated fashion with each of the providers communicating and consulting with one another.  DrSara maintains close ties to the medical community through memberships in medical societies such as the Sexual Medicine Society of North American (SMSNA, ISSM, and ISSWSH) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).  DrSara has presented papers and workshops at medical societies locally, nationally, and internationally.  In addition, DrSara enjoys reciprocal referring relationships with the following practices:

Associated Urologists of North Carolina (AUNC), and, in particular, Dr. Stephen Shaban.  Dr. Shaban is a board certified urologist with extensive training in male factor infertility and sexual medicine.  Dr. Shaban is masterful at establishing rapport with his patients, putting them at ease with his warmth and humor.  He is an old fashioned, old school physician who puts his patient’s interests above all else and advocates for the really right treatment, not just the treatment he is able to provide.

Chapel Hill Women’s Medicine (CHWM) and, in particular, Dr. Karen Clark.  Dr. Clark is a board-certified gynecologist who has extensive training in female sexual dysfunctions and menopausal medicine.  She is respectful and collegial in all her interactions with patients and is a member of the International Society for Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH).  Dr. Clark provides a wide range of non-hormonal as well as bioidentical treatments for low libido, female sexual difficulties as well as peri and post-menopausal symptoms.

Grace Pelvic Health is a specialty pelvic floor PT practice.  Dr. Erika Grace and her associates are highly trained, doctoral level physical therapists with a specific specialty in issues relating to pelvic pain. Some conditions such as painful intercourse and vaginismus require referral to a pelvic floor specialist who can manage the particulars of retraining pelvic floor muscles.  DrSara typically refers such patients to Dr. Clark for a thorough GYN exam and assessment of hormonal status.  Dr. Clark typically diagnoses pelvic floor issues and refers to Dr. Grace if necessary.
